Mini-Review and Trailer - La Vie en Rose

Tagged "The extraordinary life of Edith Piaf", winner of two Oscars (Best Actress for Marion Cotillard and Best Make-Up for Didier Lavergne and Jan Archibald), this movie based on the life of the famous French singer came to me highly recommended by those who, I should have known, have radically different tastes in movies to myself. I just couldn't get into this at all... it was relentlessly depressing, I couldn't like the main character at all and I didn't even like the music that much (and the singing hardly ever).

So, I wouldn't advise it to anyone else, but if you like depressing films you may well enjoy it! Perhaps I just don't appreciate truly artistic films... I tried to watch La Dolce Vita and got so bored half-way through that I gave up on it.

Yes, I know... Philistine!

Other films based on the lives of singers:

  • Ray - an excellent movie based on the life of Ray Charles

  • Walk the Line - a good if somewhat heavy-handed movie adaptation of the life of Johnny Cash
  • The Buddy Holly Story - this movie failed to grab me, though Buddy Holly fans will probably like it more than I did
