Starcrash!

Regular readers of this blog (all three of you) may remember that I'd discovered this movie and felt that I had to see it, as it looked so amazingly awful that it also looked like loads of fun.

Well... I came across this today!

Hmm... I actually saw Caroline Munro in person at FanFest 2010 (she's still gorgeous at... 61?!?!?  She looked nothing like that old!) - but I didn't have the nerve to go up and ask her about being in this movie. (She'd probably have wanted me to pay £25 for her autograph, which I wasn't interested in doing!)

To sample the extreme cheesiness of Starcrash, look at the trailer below:

Toy Story 3 Review

Just got back from seeing Toy Story 3 and what can I say but PIXAR have done it - yet again.

The basic story is that Andy has grown up - now 17, off to college, and apparently about to leave all his beloved toys behind - or even throw them away.  Buzz, Jessie, Mr & Mrs Potato Head et all find themselves in a Day Centre where they are going to be loved and cherished by generations of children... except things aren't all as they seem.  Torn loyalties are everywhere, with Woody seeming to be the only one clinging to the hope that Andy still values his toys.

The storyline is great, with the action and humour never letting up.  There are some great new characters (particularly Lotso, voiced by Ned Beaty, and Ken - Michael Keaton) with surprisingly deep characterisation, the visuals are tremendous, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and co do sterling work with the voice acting.  In short, you knew Toy Story 3 was going to be great because it's PIXAR, the first two Toy Stories movies were superb, and when a substandard script was offered a few years ago PIXAR's executives decided not to make the movie even though it would have been a surefire hit back then as well.

If you liked the first Toy Story movies, you're sure to love this one as well.  Personally if I had to choose between all three, I'd opt for the second one - but there's no way you're going to be disappointed with this one.

More because of the timing than changing my mind about 3D movies, I did see this one in 3D.  It seemed pretty good though there were no obvious "wow" moments.  Given the choice I'd have watched the 2D showing for a bit less money, and seeing it in 3D hasn't exactly changed my mind about that.

Oh, one other thing - after all the exciting action scenes and laugh out loud moments (don't go before you've seen the clips that run during the end credits either), you'll probably be sitting there feeling like an idiot that you've managed to come to the point of caring about a bunch of toys so much.  (I did!)

Before the main film there's an animated short called "Night and Day" (or was it "Day and Night"?).  It's a fun little story and visually very striking, due to an ingenious method of mixing modern and very early animation techniques.

TV again - "The Old Guys"

I only recently started watching this but I've become fond of it already.  Starring the excellent Clive Swift (Hyacinth's long-suffering husband in Keeping Up Appearances) and Roger Lloyd-Pack (best known as Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, and one of the few contemporary comedians I've seen on-stage [alongside Nigel Havers in "Art" some years ago) as long-time buddies Roy and Tom, this series is slow-moving but often funny. They are great pals in everything though they both lust after the beautiful Sally (Jane Asher), pretending to like her paintings etc even though they really hate them.  The series benefits greatly from the occasional appearance of Katherine Parkinson as Tom's daughter Amber - she plays the receptionist Pauline in Doc Martin and is one of Britain's finest comediennes.

The Old Guys is a refreshing change from the brash or foul-mouthed so-called comedies that litter the TV timetable, so I hope it keeps going for a good long time.

Sam and Max: Freelance Police - The Complete Animated Series

I've seen half of this now and I have to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed them. They're less refined in terms of production values than the computer games, but they're a whole bucket load of crazy, maniacal fun. Even the repeated jokes such as Max's perpetual battle to get to the phone first don't seem to get old.

Weird, bizarre and surreal - three things that go together extremely well!

It's Arrived!

No not the baby, that would be far too early... but almost as good, Sam and Max: Freelance Police - The Complete Animated Series has arrived! Considering we could only get it as an import from the States and were warned that it could take 6-12 weeks to arrive, it's come pretty quickly.

I have no idea how good the animated series of the dynamic duo will actually be, of course - I've bought it based on my love for the computer games featuring Sam and Max - but I'll be sure to review it in the near future!

Tips and tricks to make your stereo sound amazing! (Guest Post)

Tips and tricks to make your stereo sound amazing!

Do you fancy having a stereo which may have cost you less than $1000, which sounds more like an $100,000 stereo? Of course you do, who doesn’t? In principal it can be done, although it requires a lot of patience and dedication to this task. Patience will save you a lot of money, and the outcome will be truly out of this world.

In general, depending upon how much time you are willing to spend on the process and how much money on the materials. We all have various budgets, although simply by spending less on the equipment doesn’t mean you are compromising on the sound quality. We have come up with the best possible ways to ensure you are the envy of your neighbors with the best stereo on the block. Here are the best ways for you to achieve a high-end audio system without the impressive price tag.
Where to put it:

As many may know, the room the stereos are placed can either makes the speakers sound great, or can make them sound abysmal. The room acoustics are very important when setting up the stereo, as they affect the sound achieved from the speakers. If you have a room with a lot of hard surfaces, like tiles, high ceilings or glass then the sound received from the stereo would be very poor indeed. The sound would reflect creasing a poor bass with distorted highs and midranges. Whereas if you have a softer decorated and furnished room, with carpets, soft furniture and a lower ceiling then the sound created would be a great deal better.

The speakers also need to be placed in the correct place to guarantee a better response with excellent highs and mid-ranges. In general rooms have a tendency to retain standing waves which can amplify bass frequencies dependent upon the width, height and length of the room. From this you will tend to get a heavy sounding bass. To avoid this, you will need to ensure that the speaker placement is done correctly, with will not increate the standing waves. The size and shape of the room will determine the best place to put the speakers to achieve the best possible sounds.

From this you will need to find the best place the listener will achieve the greatest of sounds. The placement of the speakers, and the sound released will create a triangular shape from the speakers to the rest of the room. Your listening position should be in between the speakers and approximately one-and-a-half times as far as the distance between the speakers.

Speaker wires are very important in order to make the best out of your speakers, if you don’t have good speaker wires, then the result will be rather disappointing. In this case premium speaker cables tend to work a great deal better than the cheaper variety of wiring. As many know, you generally get what you pay for in many cases, and this is one of those occasions whereby premium wiring deliver adequate currents to the loudspeaker; in which case do not consider anything less than 12 gauge.
Build a better home stereo system:

For many people a standard receiver and speakers are enough to get them through the day. Whereas others, look for amplifiers and equalizers to truly push the sounds into another world. Amplifiers and equalizers allow people to control and adjust the sound quality, whether you want to hear the booms in your home theater or simply to hear your favorite music in true sounds. The majority of receivers have a built in amplifier which can reach a high range of decibels, enough to get the neighbors banging on your door; however many feel that such an amplifier just isn’t enough. When searching for an amplifier, you will need to ensure it will be compatible with the receivers, something you will need to research the power requirements of the speakers to know what you need; if you do get an amplifier which is simply too powerful for the speakers, then they can become damaged. Many home audio amps can produce more than 100 watts, which would mean that if you match the 100 watt amp with 75 watt speakers, then you can risk damage to the speaker membranes. Likewise, if you chose an amplifier which gives out 50 watts then your 75 watt speakers will be unpowered, which will mean you will have to crank up the amplifier just to hear a very faint noise.

If you are looking to get yourself a very loud amplifier to match your out of this world home theater seating, then you would be suggested to look for the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), which measures how much distortion you would expect from the amps. In order to get the best of the best, then you will be looking for a THD rating of 0.01% (or as close to). Once you have decided on this you will need to keep your eyes peeled for the range the amp can produce. Again if you are looking to reach the best sounds possible, then you will be looking for a 20,000 HZ (if you wish to lose your hearing), or perhaps a 15,000 HZ at the most. If you are watching a movie, sat on you theater seating the range of 200 HZ may be enough to give you the sounds you need.

The last thing you will need to keep in mind is adding a graphic equalizer which can increase and decrease audio signals. The ones to look out for are stand alone which would mean that you will have full control of the audio signals. In general the more bands your equalizer has, then the more control you will have over your home stereo. Having 30 bands means that you can select 30 various frequencies, whereas 20 bands means just 20 frequencies. The better the equalizer you get, then the more it can minimize any problems caused by the amp, although it won’t fix any of the problems.
How to make your home stereo sound amazing:

Now you know the equipment you need to better the sound of your stereo, you now need to know the extras which can put the sounds into another world.

• First you will need to look at the power connections. If you have four connected by a brass jumper. If you do then you will need to remove the jumpers, strip the wire down then thread the wire through the posts on the positive and negative sides (the wires cannot touch). You do this because the wires act as a better conductor than the brass, you will notice a difference immediately.
• Keep your speakers at ear level rather than up high, and kept on something sturdy like cinder blocks (wrap them up in wall paper and they look beautiful as well).
• Set the bass and equalizers to 0, if you turn it up high it doesn’t always make the best sounds.
• Warm you amps up for at least an hour before listening; this will guarantee the best sound because the amps will already be warm.
• Remove grilles and grille clothes from the speakers.

Melody for Three (1941)

This slightly odd movie, fairly short at 66 minutes and redeemable due to some good music and a couple of funny scenes, is mainly worth watching for seeing Fay Wray not being abducted by a giant gorilla. It's one of the "Dr Christian" series of films - apparently Jean Hersholt starred as the character in a number of films, but I'd never seen one before.

Melody for Three is about the good doctor's attempts to get a violin teacher (Fay Wray) back together with her ex-husband (they split up over a misunderstanding, it seems), and as a by-product propel her son into super-stardom - dad's a great conductor you see, but the boy doesn't know it.

It's preposterously naive and idealistic, but that doesn't stop it from having some good moments, and it's feel-good in an implausible sort of way.

All Beware... The Furfangs ARE HERE!!!

Another cool little movie by Andrea Ricca The Furfangs. Think small, furry Gremlins from outer space and you won't be too far out...

You may remember Andrea Ricca's name from previous short films The Guardian and UFO Race.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if the name Andrea Ricca appeared against "Director" of a feature-length movie sometime soon...

Gaiety George (1946)

This movie portrays the life of Irish playwright George Howard (Richard Greene, whose appallingly changeable Irish accent would put even Johnny Depp to shame), who bought a small theatre in England and set about trying to raise the standards of theatrical productions. There are of course many ups and downs to his life sotry (I have no idea how truthful the storyline actually is here), and Ann Todd as his wife Kate shares in most of them. Much of it is pretty predictable and some of the musical numbers are best forgotten, but there are one or two good songs and some funny dialogue, especially between the critics. Peter Graves plays the nasty critic Henry Carter, who for no good reason sets out to destroy Howard - who apart from several lucky breaks would quite effectively have destroyed himself/

Not a great film, but it has enough merits to be worth watching. If you look really, really, really carefully, you might spot a young Roger Moore in the audience in only his third appearance in a film. As with a lot of old restored movies, the soundtrack is quite hissy, but the visuals are well restored.

University Challenge

Why oh why do I persist in doing this to myself? I always watch University Challenge when it's on, but 9 times out of 10 it just makes me feel stupid - I only got 4 answers right tonight and didn't even understand a couple of the questions! Aurgh!

On the other hand, it was a close-fought match that went right to the wire, and was a good example of just why I like this quiz show. Ah well...

Movie Review - Shrek Forever After

The fourth and, presumably, final movie in the Shrek saga sees our ogre friend living in domestic bliss. Well... perhaps not quite bliss. Parenthood and the expectations of family and friends, plus the fact that his home has become a tourist attraction for gawping holidaymakers, are starting to wear Shrek's patience thin. So he decides, after some persuasion, to sign a contract with Rumplestilskin to go back to the old days when ogres were feared - only for one day. However, teh Rumply one is sly and Shrek soon finds himself in a living nightmare where witches rule the land, Rumplestilskin is king, ogres are enslaved and Fiona doesn't even know who Shrek is. All this, and Shrek has just 24 hours to put everything right...

As I've mentioned before I liked the first Shrek movie but not the second or third (apart from the final couple of scenes). My expectations weren't terribly high for this one, but I'm pleased to say that Dreamworks have proved me wrong here; Shrek Forever After is constantly funny and inventive, with snappy dialogue, terrific action sequences and lots of humour. As with all the other Shrek movies pop culture references abound, but the whole thing just worked a lot better for me this time. Most of the old favourites are back, but almost all somewhat different to their characters previously. Even donkey is funny rather than merely annoying.

The visuals are superb, the music and voice acting very good. In terms of production values there really is little to separate PIXAR and Dreamworks, they're both producing absolutely stunning computer animation these days. It really is hard to see how they can possibly get better... but I expect they will.

The story is pretty good, though it's all rather predictable for adults and at least one small child in the row behind me had no idea what was going on (though to be fair to the scriptwriters, that family did come in late so probably missed the crucial first two scenes which set up the whole plot). It's a sweet story the likes of which we've seen hundreds of times before, but it's handled skilfully enough and has some great moments. Some people seem to have disliked it compared to the second movie, so I guess it may depend what you thought of that one - I thought it was awful but enjoyed this one, maybe if you liked the second you'll be disappointed by this. Either way, from my point of view I'd recommend it to young and old alike.

After previous disappointing experiments I can't be bothered to pay extra to see movies in 3D - going to the pictures is expensive enough without that! - so I don't know whether the 3D is any good. Seeing it in boring old 2D was great anyway.  Also the ogre babies are very funny and cute - hope my baby doesn't end up looking like one of them though!!

Random Movie News

Just news that I've seen recently... apologies if I'm really behind the times!

  • Top Gun 2 rumoured
  • Andrew Garfield to be next Spiderman
  • Footloose being remade (why?!)

Sure there were a couple of other things... but I can't remember now!

Shrek 4

I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. I liked though didn't love the first one; the second was awful, and apart from a rousing final twenty minutes or so, the third was boring. This one however brims with humour and inventiveness, and I enjoyed it perhaps more than the first one.

Full review soon...
