Thoughts about "The Hour"

Episodes 1 and 2 - absolutely stunning.
Episodes 3 and 4 - not quite as amazing but still very good
Episodes 5 and 6 - getting a bit too convoluted and inconsistent.  It seems that the desire to avoid a cliche ending  was partly to blame for the finale feeling like a bit of a damp squid.

Random thought: Romola Garai looked and sounded astonishingly like Drew Barrymore's character Josie Geller in the movie Never Been Kissed.  (It isn't just me... even my wife agreed with me!! :-D)

Still time to watch it on BBC iPlayer (I think it's available until 19th September)

George Harrison: Living in a Material World - directed by Martin Scorsese

LIONSGATE UK TO RELEASE MARTIN SCORSESE’S DOCUMENTARY
GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD
ON DVD, DIGITAL AND BLU-RAY
FROM GROVE STREET, SPITFIRE PICTURES AND SIKELIA

Film Surveys The Life And Times Of The Iconic Musician
--------

            LONDON, July 14, 2011 – Lionsgate announced today that it will be releasing Martin Scorsese’s GEORGE HARRISON:  LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD from Grove Street Pictures on 10th October 2011.  The film was produced by Scorsese (through his Sikelia Productions banner), Olivia Harrison (through her Grove Street Pictures banner) and Nigel Sinclair (through Exclusive’s documentary label, Spitfire Pictures).  Margaret Bodde served as executive producer on the film, which was edited by David Tedeschi, who previously worked with Scorsese, Bodde and Sinclair on “No Direction Home:  Bob Dylan,” and with Scorsese and Bodde on “Public Speaking.”  Tedeschi also edited Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert film “Shine a Light.”
The documentary will be released in three editions – Double Disc DVD, Blu-Ray and a beautifully packaged Deluxe Edition including two DVDs, Blu-Ray, never before seen extras, an exclusive CD of previously unheard tracks from George Harrison and a stunning book of photographs and illustrations to accompany the film.  George Harrison: Living In The Material World will also be available to rent and to buy on digital formats.
GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD focuses the imaginative and inspired eye of one of cinema’s most preeminent filmmakers on one of the world’s most influential men.  The film takes viewers on the musical and spiritual voyage that was George Harrison’s life, much of it told in his own words.  The result is deeply moving and touches each viewer in unique and individual ways.
            Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese traces Harrison’s life from his musical beginnings in Liverpool through his life as a musician, a seeker, a philanthropist and a filmmaker, weaving together interviews with Harrison and his closest friends, performances, home movies and photographs.  Much of the material in the film has never been seen or heard before.  The result is a rare glimpse into the mind and soul of one of the most talented artists of his generation and a profoundly intimate and affecting work of cinema.
            The film includes interviews with Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr and Jackie Stewart.  They speak honestly and frankly about George’s many talents and contradictions.

Comments Scorsese, “Like so many millions of people, I first came to know George through the music, which was the soundtrack of our world.  The Beatles’ music, those beautifully lyrical guitar breaks and solos, those unforgettable songs of George’s like ‘I Me Mine’ or ‘If I Needed Someone,’ and the images, in magazines, on album covers, the TV appearances, the newsreel footage, the Richard Lester movies; and then there was the world after the Beatles, when George and his music seemed to open up and flower.  I will never forget the first time I heard ‘All Things Must Pass,’ the overwhelming feeling of taking in that all glorious music for the first time.  It was like walking into a cathedral.  George was making spiritually awake music – we all heard and felt it – and I think that was the reason that he came to occupy a very special place in our lives.  So when I was offered the chance to make this picture, I jumped at it.  Spending time with Olivia, interviewing so many of George’s closest friends, reviewing all that footage, some of it never seen before, and listening to all of that magnificent music – it was a joy, and an experience I’ll always treasure.
            Notes Olivia Harrison, “Martin Scorsese’s intuition towards George was evident the first time we met to discuss this project.  He sensed what George was about:  his music, his strong beliefs, his art, his place in the Beatles’ story and his extraordinary life afterwards.  Marty’s wonderful film has found all of that and more.
            “I am happy to be working with Lionsgate, the preeminent independent home entertainment company, on the release of our film. Their commitment to excellence is well-known, and I am confident that they will bring great passion to our project.”
            “This film was an extraordinary journey for all involved and it has been a sheer pleasure working with Martin Scorsese and Olivia Harrison to bring the amazing story and legacy of George Harrison to life,” adds Nigel Sinclair.
Guy Avshalom, COO, Lionsgate UK and Nicola Pearcey, Managing Director, Lionsgate UK, Home Entertainment comment: "Lionsgate UK is very proud and excited to be managing the release of George Harrison: Living in the Material World in the UK and Ireland. The film is an incredible tribute to an extraordinary man - and one that will be relished by music and film fans alike this October."
Exclusive Films International, the international sales and marketing arm of Exclusive, represents worldwide rights, excluding the U.S.  Scott Pascucci serves as executive producer for Grove Street and is coordinating all aspects of the film’s distribution for Grove Street.
            Additionally, in October, Abrams Books will publish Olivia Harrison’s “George Harrison:  Living in the Material World,” a personal archive of photographs, letters, diaries and memorabilia from George’s life that reveals the arc of his life, from his guitar-obsessed boyhood in Liverpool, to the astonishment of the Beatles years, to his days as an independent musician and bohemian squire.  The book release is intended to coincide with the release of Scorsese’s film.
            Scorsese’s upcoming feature, “Hugo,” a 3D adaptation of Brian Selznick’s children’s book, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield, is due to be released in the U.K. by Entertainment Films in December 2011.   In 1976, Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and it was followed by a series of outstanding successes, including “New York, New York,” “Raging Bull,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “GoodFellas,” “Casino,” “Kundun,” “The Age of Innocence,” “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator.”  Scorsese’s feature “The Departed” was released to critical acclaim in Oct. 2006, and would go on to win several Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director.  “Shine a Light,” Scorsese’s documentary of the Rolling Stones in concert, was released worldwide in April 2008.  His most recent feature was the acclaimed psychological drama “Shutter Island.”
            Scorsese’s artistic excellence has been recognized with many honors, including the Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival, the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, a Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award and a Kennedy Center Honor.  In addition to his work as a filmmaker, he has also been a staunch advocate for film preservation.  He is the founder and chair of The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of motion picture history, and in 2007, he launched the World Cinema Foundation (for which he serves as both founder and chair), dedicated to the preservation and restoration of neglected films from around the world.
            Olivia Harrison is a producer and philanthropist.  She administers the Material World Charitable Foundation, and received a Grammy Award for her video of the 2002 “Concert for George,” which she organized to benefit the Foundation in memory of her husband.  She also administers the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF, and received the 2010 UNICEF Spirit Of Compassion Award in recognition of her family’s assistance to the children of Bangladesh.
            Nigel Sinclair is a Grammy Award-winning producer, and serves as CEO of Exclusive Media Group, which includes the documentary production outfit Spitfire Pictures.

RICHARD GRIFFITHS, FRANCES DE LA TOUR, JACK O’CONNELL, GEORGE MACKAY AND ALEXANDRA ROACH TO STAR IN MICHAEL MORPURGO’S PRIVATE PEACEFUL
Principal photography to commence on 31st August 2011

London, 2011 – Fluidity Films are delighted to announce principal photography on feature film Private Peaceful.

Shooting on location in Ipswich and Suffolk, Private Peaceful, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo (War Horse), is written by Simon Reade (his debut screenplay) and directed by Pat O’Connor (Circle of Friends, Dancing at Lughnasa, Cal).

The all British cast is made up of George MacKay (The Boys are Back, Birdsong), Jack O’Connell (Eden Lake, Harry Brown, Skins), Richard Griffiths (Harry Potter, The History Boys, Withnail and I), Alexandra Roach (The Iron Lady), Frances De La Tour (Alice in Wonderland, The History Boys, The Book of Eli).
The Private Peaceful score is to be composed by Mark Knopfler. A successful solo singer-songwriter and formerly leader of Dire Straits, Knopfler has composed scores for a number of films, including Local Hero, Cal, Last Exit To Brooklyn, Wag The Dog and The Princess Bride

Private Peaceful is set in rural Devon from 1908 and in the Front Line trenches of Flanders during the First World War. The story follows the life of Tommo Peaceful (Samuel Bottomley & George MacKay) from the accident in the forest that kills his doting father James (Stephen Kennedy), the affection of his loving mother Hazel (TBA) and the camaraderie enjoyed with his older brothers Charlie (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Jack O’Connell) and Big Joe (Kyle Summercorn). Tommo tries to overcome the challenges that his young life throws at him; whether at school, or working for the Colonel (Richard Griffiths) on his country estate or avoiding their wicked Grandma Wolf (Frances De La Tour).

The outbreak of World War One offers Tommo an escape. Although underage, Tommo enlists and is joined by Charlie, leaving behind their family and the love of both their lives Molly (Izzy Meikle-Small & Alexandra Roach). Forced to adjust to a new life of conflict in Flanders, they soon learn that gas attacks and shelling are easy to survive; the real battles are the price of family loyalty, the cruel attentions of Sergeant Hanley (TBA), and facing the onslaught of summary military justice.
Michael Morpurgo, Author and Executive Producer, comments:

More than 30 years ago, after meeting a First World War veteran from my own village in Devon, I wrote War Horse, my first book about this war.

I then wrote Private Peaceful, after visiting Ypres,learning of the 300 British soldiers executed for cowardice or desertion – two for simply falling asleep at their posts. I read transcripts of their trials, and saw how unjust it had been. I visited their graves and knew I had to tell this story.

Knowing Simon and Pat , they will make the film with the passion and conviction that the 300 deserve”.

Private Peaceful is produced by Guy de Beaujeu and Simon Reade for Fluidity Films in association with Poonamallee Productions, developed in association with Peppermint Pictures. UK distributors are Exile Media .

Wartime Wanderers Charity Scheme

GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY BACKING A FEEL GOOD MOVIE!

An innovative way to invest in a feature film and benefit a charity

Wartime Wanderers is a film based on a true story of friendship, love, loyalty and survival. At the heart of the film is a beautiful spirit, which you can become involved in.

In response to an increasing demand from individuals wishing to back the film with small amounts, the production company has set up a Production Fund in aid of four charities. This offers the public a unique opportunity to donate any amount of money from as little as £5. Money raised through this route will first be used to produce the film and income from the film's release will be paid to the charities up to the full value of the fund. Thereafter all profits due to the fund will be paid to the respective charities, potentially supporting these good causes for many years to come.*

All donors receive a certificate of thanks and those donating £100 plus will receive a ticket to a premiere/gala screening and be given the opportunity to appear as an extra in the film.

To find out more and to donate, please visit: www.wartimewanderers.co.uk and click on the 'Contribute' link.

Wartime Wanderers:
War against Germany is about to be declared. In front of a 23,000 strong crowd at Burnden Park, the Bolton Wanderers captain, Harry Goslin, gives a rousing speech before leading the entire team to the local Territorial Army drill hall where they all sign up. For the next six years, as gunners in the 53rd Field Regiment of the Bolton Artillery, they face some of the heaviest fighting of the Second World War. Back at home Nat Lofthouse gets his chance to play for the team he loves. But this is not just a story about war, or football. This is the story of a group of men and women whose loyalty led them into a bloody world conflict, and whose indomitable spirit enabled them to survive it.

*The fund will be ring fenced, and will not be drawn down until the film is green lit. In the unlikely event the film does not proceed, all funds in the account, less the Paypal costs, will be donated to the charities. The full value of the fund will be represented as a percentage of the final budget for purposes of calculating any profit share.

The Moon Is Blue (1953)

The Moon is Blue is a 1953 movie. and is a fairly dire attempt at a comedy.  I kept watching in the hope that it would get better purely because it's directed by Otto Preminger. Sadly it's not among his better films... the basic plot follows William Holden's character Donald meeting and for no apparent reason falling for Maggie McNamara's character, Patti. Cynthia (Dawn Addams) is very upset that Donald didn't take advantage of her the previous night and her father David (David Niven) goes to see him, though without much rancour. Much that doesn't make a lot of sense follows and Patti's air-headed character seems (again for no discernible reason) to attract both men, while Cynthia either fumes or connives.

There are a few moments that approach humour but this very talky movie is too bogged down trying to be cleverer than it is and by repeated highly improbable reactions from its characters to be much fun at all.

Flic - The Movie Tracker. New iPhone App Release

Bristol, Connecticut - ZAE LLC today is pleased to introduce Flic - The Movie Tracker 1.0, for all iOS devices. Ever seen a movie preview and thought, "Eh, I'll wait for DVD..." then you forget about it? Not anymore! You can track upcoming releases and current films by their release on services you use, like Netflix, Redbox and more, and be updated when they hit the proverbial shelves.

Flic is an iPhone app that helps you track the movies you want to see and alerts you when they are available on the services you use. Once you've selected the services you use to watch movies, just "Flic" any movie into your queue, and we'll alert you once your movie is available to watch on iTunes, Netflix, or your favorite service. Prefer multiple services? No problem, well alert you once your movie is available on each of your preferred services.

Movies to Flic:
* Movies not yet available on your favorite service
* Movies in theaters now
* Movies "Coming Soon" to theater near you, which you'd rather rent
* Movies you hear about that are in production
* Movies you don't want to miss

You see a preview in the theater and think, "oh, I have to see that". You don't want to pay to see it in the theater, and six months later you've already forgotten about it but its now readily available to you and you don't even know it! We'll alert you the day it's available. Currently, we are developing the app for Android and other mobile devices.

The movie viewing services that Flic tracks: * inDemand (link to inDemand page)
* DirecTV
* Redbox
* iTunes
* Netflix
* Theaters
* DVD

Why is there no "Flic it!" button on certain movies? Flic was created to track movies in production, coming to theaters, in theaters, and new releases on DVD and other movie viewing services. Flic makes sure you know when they are available to you. Movies that are widely available on multiple services are not able to be "Flic'd" into your queue.

Why is there a red badge on "my queue" and on the app icon? The red badge (and number) signifies the amount of newly available movies in your queue. Once you open the movie in your queue once, the badge (and new notifier) will disappear. It's an easy way to see which movies you've already checked on and which you haven't.

How long will a movie stay in my queue? Once you Flic a movie, it's there until you delete it. If the movie is not yet available on any of your services, it will appear in your "waiting" queue. Once it's available on any of your preferred services, it will move to your "available" queue. Movies in theaters will automatically move back to the "waiting" queue when they are no longer available in theaters. You will be notified again when they are available on one of your other preferred services.

Device Requirements:* iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
* Requires iPhone OS 4.0 or later
* 5.9 MB

Pricing and Availability:Flic - The Movie Tracker 1.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Entertainment category.

Air Playit - the New Way to Watch Video on iPhone/iPad

Chengdu, China - Air Playit, a new video audio streaming software published by Digiarty Software, Inc., is now changing the way of watching video on iPhone iPad that people are used to. Without the need to sync via iTunes, people can remotely get their iOS devices connected with any video on their PC or Mac via WiFi, 3G/4G network. Videos even in incompatible formats such as MKV, M2TS, AVCHD, AVI, WMV now can be played on iPhone iPad smoothly and instantly.

Streaming video is not a new but definitely a promising media delivery method. It symbolizes real time and efficiency. Air Playit takes advantages of this technological innovation and opens up a new way for people to watch video on the go. It combines a streaming server with app client for iPhone and iPad. Users need to install the server on their PC or Mac, with which they can set up the video library they want to stream. Then the app client will interact with the server and play the streaming videos over the air. Without waiting, people can use iPhone or iPad to watch the video on their home computer even from hundreds of miles away.

Since its release on Jul.16, this free video streaming app for iPhone iPad passed 260,000 downloads on Apple App Store. Evidently, this new way to watch video is well-received. "According to the survey we made, users are happy with two main factors. Firstly, Air Playit gives them wireless and instant access to the video library on their computers. Secondly, they don't need video converter software any longer." said Jack, CEO of Digiarty Software.

Highlights of Air Playit:
* Support streaming 320 different video and audio formats to iPhone iPad
* Automatically cache music. Users can enjoy the music on iPhone iPad without downloading again
* Support Apple TV-Out. This feature lets user stream video & music to TV via iOS devices
* The built-in HTTP server gives users access to the media stored on computer via any web browser
* Adjust video/audio quality and resolution for each video as well as for different network connection type, including local WiFi, remote WiFi, 3G and 4G
* Specify permissions to the shared folders including Admin, Kids and Public. Other family members or friends can watch the videos you share, too

It is known to all that Apple devices have limited support for audio video file formats. With Air Playit, this is not an issue. It delivers videos from PC/Mac straight to iPhone iPad without saving the file and taking up storage. Thereby, users don't have to go through lengthy process of converting videos to iOS device compatible format beforehand. Air Playit does the video conversion on the fly which makes the videos playable immediately.

*visit the iTunes, App Store and Mac App Store*

TRIBECA FILM ACQUIRES EDWARD BURNS’ NEWLYWEDS TO BE RELEASED ACROSS MULTI PLATFORMS

Actor/Writer/Director Explores Relationships in Multi-Character Story

“…its story is made crisp and new by some very intimate performances.”- Movieline

Newlyweds is vintage Burns: charming, talky and funny.” - Forbes
New York, NY – August 4, 2011 – Tribeca Film announced today that it has acquired US and Canadian distribution rights to Newlyweds, actor/writer/director Edward Burns’ comedic relationship drama that had its world premiere as the Closing Night selection at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. A release in late 2011 is planned across multiple platforms.

Since the 1995 release of the critically-acclaimed The Brothers McMullen, Edward Burns has been an independent film renegade, utilizing cutting-edge technology to make quality motion pictures on low budgets while reaching wide audiences through new platforms such as iTunes and Video on Demand.

Newlyweds is the 10th film written and directed by Burns. Shot in a fast paced 12 days exclusively in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, the film is a chronicle of modern marriage complete with the crackling humor and sharp insights into contemporary relationships that Burns fans have come to love. The film tracks a newly wedded couple whose honeymoon period is upended by the arrival of the husband’s wild-child baby sister and the crumbling marriage of the wife’s meddlesome sister. A 21st Century Manhattan love story, Newlyweds highlights the unarguable truth that when you get married, you’re not just getting a husband or wife, you’re getting the family, the friends, and even the exes.

The cast includes Burns, Caitlin FitzGerald (It’s Complicated), Max Baker, Marsha Dietlein Bennett and Kerry Bishé (Nice Guy Johnny, Scrubs). Burns produced Newlyweds with producing partner Aaron Lubin and William Rexer. Mike Harrop served as executive producer.

“I have enjoyed a great relationship with the Tribeca Film Festival since its inception and I am so thrilled to be collaborating with them to bring Newlyweds to a broad commercial audience,” said Burns. “The unique, multi-platform release of Nice Guy Johnny broke new ground last year and brought my work to audiences who have traditionally had trouble accessing independent films theatrically. I am extremely confident that we will really build on that success now that we have Tribeca Film onboard for Newlyweds.”

“Newlyweds shows how authentic filmmaking can spring from intentionally modest circumstances. Made on a remarkably small budget, it is a rich and resonant exploration of relationships brought to life by vivid location work and lively, intelligent performances,” said Geoffrey Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises. “We look forward to presenting Newlyweds to North American audiences.”

The deal was negotiated by Nick Savva, Director of Acquisitions, and Nancy Schafer, SVP, for Tribeca Film with Burns and Lubin along with Cinetic Media’s John Sloss.

“Newlyweds walks along a well-traveled path blazed previously by Woody Allen, but its story is made crisp and new by some very intimate performances,” noted Movieline. Bishe and Fitzgerald “excel at playing simmering resentment on screen,” raved Elle magazine.
