Top Ten Summer Movies of All Time (Guest Post)

Now that we're in the summer 2012, it is the perfect time to take a look at the top ten summer movies of all time. These movies either carry a strong summertime theme or were released during the hot and scorching season.

#10: E.T.

Steven Spielberg's E.T. was released during the summer of 1982 and remains a a sci-fi classic today that the entire family can enjoy. An isolated young boy encounters a stranded extraterrestrial. The boy must remain brave to defy the authorities and help the extraterrestrial return to its home planet. This truly is a memorable classic that thrives on imagination and spirit.

#9: Transformers (2007)

Transformers was released during summer 2007 and became an instant sensation. An ancient struggle between the heroic autobots and evil Decepticons reemerges on earth. How is a young teenager involved in this ancient struggle? Transformers is a must-watch summertime flick.

#8: Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest Gump was released during the summer of 1994 and became an unlikely summer blockbuster. This comedy-drama-romance movie tracks the life of Forrest Gump, a slow-witted Alabama native, who miraculously happens to witness and even influence some of the most crucial and defining moments of the 20th century.

#7: The Sandlot (1993)

The Sandlot is an excellent summer-themed movie that the entire family can truly enjoy. Scotty Smalls has just moved to a new neighborhood and is itching to learn the game of baseball. He is fortunate that local baseball expert Rodriguez takes him under his wings and allows him to join the local baseball crew. The crew must ultimately contend with The Beast, a legendary ball-eating dog.

#6: Terminator 2 (1991)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day was released during the start of summer 1991 and remains one of the most memorable sci-fi thrillers ever made. An advanced terminator is sent back in time to destroy John Connor before he ever becomes the leader of the human resistance. A less advanced terminator, played by Arnold Schwarznegger, is also sent back in time to provide John protection.

#5: Independence Day (1996)

As can be inferred by its title, Independence Day was released right before Independence Day 1996. In this summertime epic, humans must stand up against aliens that are intent on invading and destroying earth. Man's will to survive is pitted against the aliens' superior technology in this intense thriller.

#4: Jurassic Park (1993)

Steven Spielberg's sci-fi thriller Jurassic Park was released during the summer of 1993. Amazing advancements in science has allowed for the creation of an island full of real live dinosaurs. However, things go very wrong when an employee tampers with the island's security system, allowing the cloned dinosaurs to escape.

#3: Jaws (1975)

Jaws is an absolute classic that was released during the start of summer 1975. When a horrifying and mammoth great white shark begins to spread its terror throughout the island community of Amity, it is up to a police chief, marine scientist and fisherman to stop it in its tracks. Jaws is known as the very first summer blockbuster hit.

#2: The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight, an installment in the Batman series, was released during the summer of 2008 and became an instant blockbuster hit. With the assistance of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman is bent on destroying the criminal organizations that continue to roam the streets of Gotham. However, dealing with criminal mastermind The Joker proves to be no easy task.

#1: Star Wars (1977)

Who hasn't heard of the epic series that is Star Wars? Star Wars IV - A New Hope was released almost exactly 35 years ago right before the start of summer 1977. In the movie, Luke Skywalker, a farm boy, must save the Princess from Darth Vader, and the entire galaxy from the Galactic Empire's Death Star. This movie became an instant cultural phenomenon that continues to define popular culture today.
