500 Days of Summer Review (guest post)

You know within the first several minutes of the movie that this is not your typicala happy, love story. But that is okay. For those who are tired of the rom-coms that show love in unrealistic ways, this is your new favorite love movie.

500 Days of Summer was released in 2009 and sets in a large city somewhere in America. The movie stars talented actor, Joseph Gordon Levitt (Tom) and the quirky actress Zooey Deschanel (Summer)as a mismatched couple with different beliefs in love. With a lesser known cast supporting mostly Tom’s character, you are given a few great one-liners as well as see where he gets his moral support. Hopeless romantic Tom falls for there-is-no-such-thing-as-true-loveSummer and they spend 500 days of a roller coaster of emotions together.

The movie guides you with screen shots of certain days of their relationship and what happened on that day, a very clever way at a more in-depth look of what went wrong or right, depending on how the audience views it. There is a short segment of the movie where it takes you on a ‘reality’ and ‘expectations’ from Tom’s view. It’s a hard realization for both Tom and the audience and resonates with those who have gone through the same situation. There are less tears and less ‘awww’ moments than most rom coms but more laughs and ‘ha I can relate to that’ moments.

The movie tagline describes exactly what you will see, ‘This is not a love story. This is a story about love.’ So sit down, grab a bottle of wine and enjoy.
