How To Train Your Dragon 2 mini-review

How To Train Your Dragon 2 is a worthy sequel to the original movie, expanding far beyond the island of Berk in search of adventure.  You don’t really need to have seen the original to enjoy this, but it helps.  The aesthetics are superb and there are some great locations and action set pieces, and in particular the friendship between Hiccup and his dragon Toothless remains the heart and soul of the story, although many other themes are explored and there is plenty of humour spliced between all the drama and action.

There were a couple of things I wasn’t too keen on – one of the plot devices, although powerful, I wish hadn’t happened (don’t want to say too much in case you’re reading this and haven’t already seen the movie, but if you have, I think you can probably guess what I’m referring to), and Cate Blanchett’s voicing just seemed to me to sound a little forced.  But these are minor quibbles, it takes the excellent first movie and bounces off it into new and interesting directions.  (If forced to choose between them I’d probably have to say that I marginally preferred the original, but it’s a close call!)

I prefer the original as well, but this is quite a worthy sequel.

Definitely! Interesting that Stoic will feature in number 3 (according to the voice cast listing on IMDB), I wonder if they will find a way to bring him back or if it will be just flashbacks? (I suspect the latter, but hope for the former!)
